The Portland Cement Association (PCA), representing America’s cement manufacturers, celebrates the approval of Portland-limestone cement (PLC) by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. This decision marks a significant milestone, as it signifies nationwide acceptance of a lower-carbon variant of a crucial construction material.
PLC, formulated with a higher limestone content, maintains the same level of effectiveness as traditional Portland cement while boasting a CO2 footprint up to 10% smaller. In 2023 alone, the United States reduced CO2 emissions by over 4 million tons by incorporating PLC and other blended cement alternatives. This achievement comes at a pivotal juncture, as state transportation departments, significant consumers of cement, are poised to utilize Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for infrastructure rehabilitation projects, further driving cement consumption.
Mike Ireland, President and CEO of PCA, expresses enthusiasm for this significant stride toward sustainable construction practices. Transitioning to Portland-limestone cement not only promises substantial CO2 savings but also ensures that construction projects meet performance standards for durability, safety, and sustainability.
This milestone reflects the increasing adoption and accessibility of PLC, underscoring efforts to minimize construction’s carbon footprint. The shift toward sustainable construction materials aligns with broader initiatives aimed at fostering a green built environment. Recent data from the US Geological Survey indicates that PLC’s market share surpassed that of traditional Portland cement in June 2023, indicating a growing trend toward environmentally friendly construction practices.
