Carbon Upcycling Joins Portland Cement Association

Carbon Upcycling, an innovator in decarbonization and carbon capture & utilization (CCUS) technology for hard-to-abate industries, has proudly become a member of the Portland Cement Association (PCA). This strategic move represents a significant advancement in our ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability and mitigate the carbon footprint associated with cement production.

Mike Ireland, President and CEO of PCA, expressed enthusiasm about Carbon Upcycling’s membership. “We are delighted to welcome Carbon Upcycling to the Portland Cement Association. Their dedication to sustainability aligns perfectly with our goals, and their innovative approaches are essential for increasing circularity and progressing toward carbon neutrality in the cement sector,” Ireland stated.

The U.S. Department of Energy has recently committed over $1.2 billion to PCA member companies for launching decarbonization initiatives under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. This substantial federal investment highlights the cement industry’s determination to achieve carbon neutrality. In this transformative landscape, CCUS companies like Carbon Upcycling are crucial for developing and implementing technologies that reduce carbon emissions.

Carbon Upcycling’s collaboration with major international cement producers such as CRH and Cemex underscores its role in addressing industry-wide challenges and advancing sustainability efforts. These partnerships are focused on deploying cutting-edge technologies that significantly lower carbon emissions in cement production.

Apoorv Sinha, CEO of Carbon Upcycling, emphasized the importance of collaboration in driving decarbonization. “Strategic partnerships with industry leaders are key to achieving effective and credible decarbonization in the cement sector. Joining the PCA reaffirms our commitment to advancing sustainable practices and making substantial reductions in carbon emissions. We are excited to work alongside our fellow PCA members to shape a low-carbon, resilient future,” Sinha said.

Carbon Upcycling is dedicated to promoting the adoption of sustainable technologies, enhancing industry standards, and influencing policy to facilitate a low-carbon future. Recently achieving B Corp status, Carbon Upcycling is also pioneering a groundbreaking carbon capture and utilization system at Canada’s largest cement plant, operated by Ash Grove, a CRH Company. This project will produce low-carbon cement for the concrete market, supporting Canada’s national decarbonization objectives.

It’s evident that Carbon Upcycling’s integration into the PCA is a pivotal step towards advancing sustainable practices and achieving industry-wide carbon neutrality. Their innovative technologies and strategic partnerships are setting a new benchmark for the future of cement production.
