Fortera, a leader in low-carbon cement solutions, has secured $85 million in Series C funding to accelerate the global rollout of its innovative ReAct® green cement technology. This funding round saw participation from existing investors Khosla Ventures and Temasek, alongside new contributors including Wollemi Capital, NOVA by Saint-Gobain, Presidio Ventures, and Alumni Ventures.
The funds will enable Fortera to expand its operations beyond its Redding ReCarb Plant, furthering its mission to reduce cement’s carbon footprint. Fortera’s ReAct® cement technology captures CO2 emissions from traditional cement production and converts them into a low-carbon mineral form, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 70% per ton compared to conventional cement.
Ryan Gilliam, CEO and co-founder of Fortera, emphasized the importance of scaling globally: “To make a meaningful impact on emissions, we need an economic pathway for global expansion. With this funding and the launch of our first plant, we’re advancing our commercial project development to accelerate low- to zero-carbon cement deployment. We’re excited to work with leading investment firms to commercialize our technology and drive towards zero CO2 cement.”
Fortera’s technology integrates with existing cement infrastructure, making it cost-effective and easier to scale. Its ReCarb process operates at lower kiln temperatures and is compatible with renewable energy, further reducing emissions. Natalie Volpe, Director at Wollemi Capital, highlighted the technology’s unique advantages: “Fortera offers a practical solution by working within the current cement ecosystem, making it the most effective technology for rapid decarbonization of the industry.”
With over 100,000 hours of R&D, more than 100 global patents, and a decade of real-world testing, Fortera’s ReAct cement matches the strength and durability of traditional cement and is ASTM-approved as a partial substitute. The technology has earned accolades, including being named the 2023 US National Winner for Outstanding Projects by the Net-Zero Industries Awards and the Green Builder Media 2024 Sustainable Product of the Year.
Saint-Gobain’s Basma Kharrat noted, “Our investment in Fortera aligns with our goal of decarbonizing industries. We’re committed to supporting startups that drive sustainable innovations and look forward to advancing our partnership with Fortera.”
