Ecocem’s groundbreaking low carbon cement technology, ACT, has been chosen to feature prominently at the upcoming Buildings and Climate Global Forum, a landmark event following the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).
As the sole international cement technology company selected for participation, Ecocem will join esteemed ministers from national and sub-national governments, alongside fellow industry leaders and representatives of international organizations.
Co-organized by the French government and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with support from the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (Global ABC), the Forum is scheduled for March 7th to 8th, 2024, in Paris, France.
This event builds upon the momentum generated by the successful launch of the Buildings Breakthrough initiative at COP28 in late 2023. Endorsed by 28 governments and the European Commission, among others, this initiative aims to make near-zero-emission and resilient buildings the standard by 2030.
The two-day Buildings and Climate Global Forum provides a unique platform for senior government officials, construction industry leaders, and stakeholders to revolutionize building practices. Recognizing the pivotal role of the construction sector in achieving the ambitious 1.5°C decarbonization target set forth in the 2015 Paris Agreement, governments will be urged to endorse a common declaration outlining shared principles and cooperation frameworks.
Ecocem’s ACT technology has received a European Technical Assessment (ETA), affirming its safety, high performance, scalability, low carbon footprint, and energy efficiency. This ETA paves the way for the full commercialization of the technology by 2026, offering a significant opportunity for the cement and concrete industries to transition toward sustainability.
ACT represents a scalable breakthrough in cement technology, integrating various technical innovations with readily available low-carbon materials to achieve rapid and competitive decarbonization of cement production, potentially reducing emissions by up to 70%. Aligned with the Forum’s objectives, ACT holds promise as a key contributor to global decarbonization efforts.
Donal O’Riain, Founder and Managing Director at Ecocem, emphasized the critical importance of urgent and profound decarbonization in the construction sector, particularly in cement production, which accounts for nearly 8% of global CO2 emissions. He highlighted Ecocem’s ACT technology as a transformative solution capable of aligning the cement sector with the ambitious targets of the 2015 Paris Agreement, stressing the urgent need for global mobilization to deploy this technology effectively and swiftly.
