Cemex Launches Renewable Energy Initiative at Alrewas Ready-Mix Plant

Global building materials leader Cemex has unveiled a significant renewable energy project at its new Alrewas Readymix Plant (Pyford Brook) in Staffordshire, UK. As part of Cemex’s ambitious ‘Future in Action’ climate program, the Alrewas Plant has adopted a hybrid energy system comprising a 90kWh battery and solar panels, aiming to cut CO2 emissions by 200 tons annually.Opened in 2023, the Alrewas Plant initially operated solely on diesel generators due to the lack of mains electricity. With the installation of the new renewable energy system, the facility has reduced night-time diesel generator use by 68%, marking a substantial decrease in CO2 emissions and operational costs.Steven Coles, Operational Excellence Manager for West Europe Materials, notes, “Cemex is committed to leveraging innovative technologies to lower our carbon footprint. The integration of renewable energy at Alrewas showcases our dedication to achieving net-zero operations. Our collaboration with the Renewables Institute has been instrumental in advancing our skills and completing successful renewable projects.”Andy Spencer, VP for Corporate Affairs, Sustainability & ERM, adds, “The Future in Action program is driving creativity and innovation within our teams. The renewable setup at Alrewas not only offers excellent payback and CO2 reduction but also provides a model for other off-grid operations. We’re excited about future projects and the potential for broader application of these technologies.”Following the success at Alrewas, Cemex plans to install a similar battery and solar unit system at the Hamer Warren quarry in the New Forest, Hampshire, to further reduce diesel consumption in on-site pumping activities.Cemex continues to lead in the circular economy within the construction sector, focusing on alternative fuels, waste materials, and digital advancements to enhance customer experience and operational efficiency.
